I’ll prolly get down voted for this but i still wish we took Ryan ramczyk instead
Nothing wrong with that. I wanted us to take OL in the first too. Both RamCzyk and Cam Robinson were available and both ended up having solid seasons. I'm not unhappy Engram is on the team and I'm excited to see how he grows, but I still feel as though we should have more adequately addressed the glaring need of talented OL on our team.
Totally valid opinion. Oline was and is our biggest need. I do however think that Engram has some really unique skills for a TE. You don’t find guys his size who can move like he can. Ultimately, I think we can land a tackle in this years draft comparable to Ramcyk. I don’t know how many TEs that are going to be coming into the league with 4.4 speed and the route running ability of a WR.
I wanted him as well. With hindsight, I'm not sure I'm upset with the engram pick though. I think Ramcyck was the only real solution to our offensive line problems this year. Reese didn't have a lot to work with in free agency. Wished we drafted dion Dawkins too .
All the regret was in the first week.
We all started to like him and the season made us exited to watching him grow next season.
I'm happy with Engram. Obviously we would've liked to see OL addressed more than it was, but Engram had a great year (minus a few drops) and looks poised to become the big-bodied target that Eli has missed for so many years
I'm in the minority but I think it was a big mistake. He's a wide receiver, basically, and he has a real problem with drops. We had a chance to take players in positions of need with Foster, Ramcyzk, and Robinson still on the board but Reese got cute with it and I think that's one of the reasons he's gone.
I also think it was a mistake. He is not really a TE, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up getting switched to WR. We have a ton of holes, TE/WR hybrid wasn’t really what we needed
Hmm...so you're saying we already have Marshall's replacement? Interesting.
I completely and respectfully disagree, the reason he is a matchup nightmare is because he can burn almost any lb in the league and is bigger than most safeties so in a sense he should be near uncoverable one on one in our sche. He is a sub par TE blocker, but still better than most WR’s which is why you have to respect him as a blocker when lined up at TE and not just put a corner on him. If we split him out to WR I think he loses a lot of value because teams dont have to worry about him getting singled up by a lb or safety and hitting the home run play. On the other hand having a three wide set of OBJ and Shepard on one side and Engram on the other with Barkley in the backfield does get my meat tingling. Wishful thinking though.
Upvote for an honest opinion, I wouldn't say mistake but I get what your saying. It was a luxury pick when we really could/should have addressed actual postions in need.
I agree with you. He’s a nice receiver, but the line has been a concern for years now and he is far too small to be an effective blocking TE. If he was a big TE that could block and catch, I would have been fine with it but I didn’t like it at the time.
Now, we just have to live with it. Hopefully we rebuild the line and he can just be a receiver. He’s not a bad player and had a good rookie season, I just don’t think he fit our needs.
I was kinda indifferent about it at first but he became one of the bright spots of the team although I standby that he wasn’t necessarily what we needed. My only criticism of him is he drops really easy catches which gets frustrating.
I have noticed that sometimes as well
I don't think the lukewarm reaction had anything to do with Engram, really. Most of us here knew we wanted an O-Line guy, or a Linebacker who could actually play pass and run defence.
Nobody saw EE coming, so it took a while to come to terms with it.
When I saw the pick, my first thought was "another Reese reach."
Then I watched his college tape. So excited we got this kid.
the real question should be how are you colts fan & a ole miss fan?
Donte Moncrief is my hero. I went to the 2012 Egg Bowl (MSU .vs. Ole Miss In-State Rivalry Game), which was my only Egg Bowl I've been to, where he essentially went all out and kind acarried Ole Miss to a 42-21 victory over MSU. He got drafted in 2013 by the Indianapolis Colts in the 3rd Round Pick 90. He had an amazing rookie year too.
Because of our issues with oline, I think there’s a real argument that he wasn’t the best choice in the short term. That being said, I think he’s going to develop Into an Elite TE and will prove to be the right long term pick. The guy just is such a ridiculous physical mismatch. I’d be willing to bet he’s already the fastest TE in the league. I was really impressed by how he handled the season. TE is a really tough position to transfer in on. He also apparently played next to zero snaps inline in college so he had to essentially learn a new position on top of that. And on top of that, he had to literally be the #1 offensive weapon for about half the season. I thought that his handling of what was an unexpected amount of pressure for a rookie TE was exceptional.
engram probably would've been available for us in the 2nd
I think I remember hearing the Falcons or someone close behind us were trying to trade up for him.
Absolutely ecstatic actually. TE was a need for sure. I hated having Donnell and Tye as our "safety blanket" for Eli whenever he came under pressure which was often. Unhealthy and unreliable, and couldn't run routes to save their lives.. (see Week 3 against the Redskins two seasons ago, cost us the redzone and ultimately the game with two MASSIVE turnovers).
For me I wasn’t as upset about the pick as I was that we didn’t trade up to get OJ Howard once he slipped to the lower teens. I didn’t watch Howard enough in Tampa to comment if I was justified or not.
Lotta drops. Couple games he looked terrible....but more good than bad. A lot of those games there was a lot of pressure on him due to pretty much everyone being injured.
I wanted oline addressed or either Howard, Engram or Njoku (in that order).
