Yeah I was considering buying my own earlier this year then we found this unused one from an earlier staff member so I hopped over to it.
I love this thing tbh, and I was going through the build page myself toying with the buy button for a while before finding this one in storage. Lucky me!
The one I'm on has an
i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz and two
M471A5143EB0-CPB (4GB DDR4) memory modules giving me 8gb of ram. I personally wish I had 16gb but I can't upgrade it right now and as I understand System76's build page, this CPU isn't even offered anymore in these laptops and instead, i7's. But more cpu strength just means it'll get hotter faster [See below]
If I had any gripe with the laptop, it'd be the fan system. If you give it a file to gzip from fast enough source, or try and filter 1000 thunderbird emails oh man does the fan start to take off. At my work desk I have two monitors and the inbuilt, and playing a 4k video back on it's internal 4k display makes it quite loud just on it's own unfortunately. Even rich 1080p can take them off.
I've even propped it up on an angle to breathe better and it has statistically helped when looking at my
sensors command output and graphing it, but damn the laptop has the capacity to be loud.
Overall I hardly do CPU intensive operations on it (Browsing with many tabs, 10+terminals connected and open type of life) and it's responsiveness and power for it's sleek small size definitely outweigh the fan volume.
It's also possible more recent physical builds have a better cooling setup. I'm unsure. But it seems to rely mostly on passive cooling until you start crunching numbers.
I have a feeling for the kind of work I do, I would grow tired of that sound very fast. Though I hear 8th gen CPUs are a little better on heat output. Thanks for sharing your experience!
